Okay, so sometimes a sketch is just about playing with text as shape. I started typing out the words “something brilliant” in the hopes of coming up with something brilliant, and brilliant or not, this is what I made. Inkscape works with text and shapes in amazing ways, and with some nice fonts and colors, you can make something fun and interesting out of literally nothing but a phrase. Hope you enjoyed it!
Today is David’s birthday (and Michael LeMasney’s and Lynette Day Young’s) so I thought I’d make a sketch about birthdays today. I’m coming down off a cake high, so forgive the simpliity of the sketch.
In Inkscape, I imported David’s image, and I placed a large bold block form 2 on the page and resized it to fill the page. I made sure that the z order of the two items had the 2 up front and the picture in the back. I placed them in such an arrangement so that David’s eye was placed in the center of the stroke of the 2. I selected them both and did a object/clip/set which gave me David’s face in the shape of a number 2. A very simple operation with a very interesting outcome.
My very good friend Kelly Lake and her husband Ed were recently blessed with twins, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a shot at motherhood. I love the fact that she’s got a double shot, and I’m cheering them on. She is part of the 365 project over at http://www.facebook.com/365sketches and she knows I’m always looking for sketch ideas for this project. She said “So… Ed has this t-shirt idea that I think if anyone can make it possible YOU can… he said, ‘you should get a t-shirt with a window on it and two little baby faces pressed up against the glass’ I guess in a ‘window on the womb with twins’ what do you think?” I said I loved it and that as soon as my current queue ran out, I’d get on it. The other day I was in Princeton, NJ sitting on Witherspoon and saw someone walk by with a stylized Jolly Roger but instead of a skull, it had a cupcake in its place. I was struck by its quirky sensibility, though i must say I still am not sure what it means. Death to cupcakes? Death by cupcakes? Down with sugar? I’m so sweet it’s poisonous? I’ll never know, but I loved it, and decided to make my own with a hamburger. Mine might be a warning to those with an unwatched hamburger that they should keep one hand on the bun and one hand on their sidearm when I’m around. I might just be a burger pirate.
John LeMasney received his Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership with a communications in December of 2009, and walked as a part of Commencement in May 2010.
John graduated with distinction, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.95.
John was also awarded the Graduate Education Outstanding Achievement Award for Organizational Leadership.
He would like to thank his teachers, fellow students, family and friends who supported his efforts.
I’m taking part in the graduation ceremony at Rider University today to publicly celebrate my successful acquisition (with honors) of the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Communication that I acquired in December of 2009, and I thought it would be fun to explain how that began. In 2007 I had a short conversation with one Kathleen Pierce, a very good friend and a major influence, who suggested that I should pursue my MA at Rider. I said that I wasn’t sure what it would do for me, and that I wasn’t necessarily interested in any of the graduate programs I knew about at Rider. She asked me if I knew about the brand new MA in Organizational Leadership with concentrations in communication and technology, and I said that I didn’t. She handed me a brochure and went on to convince me that it was a very good fit for me, and would benefit me greatly in the long run. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to Kathleen for giving me a gentle but firm nudge. It was just the thing I wanted, and I just didn’t know. I’ve learned so much, and my life and thinking has been thoroughly altered. I’d also like to thank Liza Watson, the chair of the MAOL program, who has become a good friend, and who inspired my love for research. I’d like to congratulate all of my successful cohorts, like Ayo, Watts, Jillian, Michele, Laurie, and the rest. Best to you in your endeavors! Finally, I’d like to thank my wife Dawn and my family for allowing all the late nights of writing, studying, and reading, as well as their encouragement.
