Hundredth Meridian

Peter Bromberg, a very good friend, suggested using a Tragically Hip lyric as a basis for a sketch.

Would you be willing to create a sketch illustrating the Tragically Hip Lyric, “Driving down a corduroy road/ Weeds standing shoulder high / Ferris wheel is rusting off in the distance. You can give it a listen here to get the vibe: Some more context at: http://www.facebook.com/l/e3d30;www.hipmuseum.com/100.html Thanks my friend, Pete

Thanks so much for the suggestion, Peter! It’s a great song, and I loved the visuals it evoked for me. I’d love to try this a few more times, as what I see in my head in response to the song is not quite what I was able to fit in 500px square, but that happens pretty often. 😉

I absolutely love this image. The vegetation on either side of the road looks like corn and since I’m from Iowa it has meaning to me. In fact it looks like I’ve seen it before in person. Is this perhaps based on a photo? The the way the objects are placed in the composition and the style would make a great CD cover.

Thanks a million, Joe! I used a few photos to construct this image — I used a photo of corduroy for the road, I used actual photos of corn on either side of a path, which I separated and widened, I used an image of a perfectly working ferris wheel, and I used another image of a long road in order to place each of the pieces. I brought it all in, and converted the images to paths using bitmap trace, then placed, stretches, cut, and colored them each to make the scene. It was a lot of fun, but you never know how people will react. I’m loving how it’s making a connection with people. Special thanks to Peter for the inspiration!

John, I missed this one earlier. I’m a huge fan of the Hip as well. And this is a wonderfully evocative rendition of that song. I haven’t looked at the Facebook page mentioned above, but I can already picture one for Nautical Disaster!
