I used path as pattern path effect tool to make a stenciled face. In this case, I started with a photo of a girl’s face, did a trace bitmap operation, made text lines in three different sizes, then converted the lines of Inkscape‘s text into paths, and used them to paint the dark areas of the face, while leaving the lighter areas a pure white. Inkscape is an amazingly versatile tool, and this is just one more example.

The Comfort Inn logo might be nice with a happy face and beard
Okay, so this one came from seeing a hotel (Comfort Inn on Route 1 in Lawrenceville, NJ) logo and saying “I could do that in Inkscape.” Then, after figuring out the Boolean involved to cut up the circles properly, I decided to make it into a face for 365 Sketches. Then, I remembered that I promised Robin Milne that I’d add a beard to the next sketch, since we all agree that Beards are Epic. And so, there you have it.

Number 4 has been through a few scrapes. He’s an older guy, clean cut bald head, with smart glasses, and an awkward lip. When he looks in the mirror, he wonders where his hair all went, why things turned out the way they did, and regrets a few of the fistfights he’s had over topics as silly as baseball teams. Inspired by some old fool on The People’s Court. He was made in Inkscape, starting with a square converted to path, then turned into a pill shape. Half ellipses for ears, full ellipses for glasses and shadows, arrow shaped paths for hair, eyes, and lots of other shapes. And so on. Today’s sketch is a face made of two sunny side up eggs with a side of bacon. I love me some breakfast, and with the holidays come some pretty good ones traditionally. With the face theme, I just figured I’d have some fun with eggs. In Inkscape, I used the Bezier tool to make an outline of the egg, slightly blurred (not shirred) and put two yellow ellipses (and white highlight ellipses), converted to paths and tweaked them with the node tool for the yolky eyes. I then took a wavy path, applied a simple pattern to the path, then converted to a path and colored it in for the bacon. Then I added some streaks of various colors for the marbling. I duplicated the bacon and flipped it, since I have never seen two pieces of identical bacon, and don’t know anyone who eats one piece of bacon with two eggs. Finally, I duplicated the layered pieces of bacon and made them gray and blurred, then sent them to the back to create an underlying shadow for some depth. Fun and tasty looking.

I was inspired to make a happy face that looked just a little like Salvador Dali. I used Inkscape‘s Shape tool for the face, object to path for flexibility, and Pencil tool set to 50% smoothing with Triangle shape settings for the hair, and the spiro path effect to give the curly hair effects.
365 Sketches is a response to a post I read tonight that suggests that I design something every day ( http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/12/22/design-something-every-day/ ). As an Inkscape enthusiast, I wanted specifically to share ways in which I feel that Inkscape excels as a design application. I was inspired by the post to post a sketch every day from Inkscape, something quick, minimal, and demonstrative of Inkscape’s abilities. As a theme, I’m starting with faces, but I don’t feel like I’m limiting myself just to faces. If I feel like straying from the theme, I will. I also intend to maybe post more than one post if I feel like it, or let the post skip a day if necessary. All in all though, I’m going to try to end up at the end of 2010 with at least 365 sketches.
