I am now co-teaching a graduate level course in the Communication track of the MA in Organizational Leadership program at Rider University. The course, COMM 563, is Digital Media Communication. In the class we focus on the issues, concepts, and problems of organizational communication using digital media. The course uses WordPress as a learning and posting platform, and participants learn how to develop effective publishing skills, integrating various digital media, and developing an audience for their brand.
In January of 2011, I was able to propose and deliver three sessions for a twice-a-year event at Rider that allows for focused faculty development at Rider University. My sessions were: 10 technologies Faculty should know about, co-presented with Shaun Holland, a session on the upcoming rollout of Blackboard 9.1 at Rider, and finally, an overview of Wimba Pronto, delivered primarily by Shaun Holland.
Today’s sketch is a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the greatest thinkers, writers and orators of our recent history, on his nationally recognized day of service. Using a famous AP photo, I used GIMP’s threshold tool to essentially break the photo into two colors: a highlight in white, and a shadow in black. Then, using the select by color tool I selected the black shadow and began to paint into a new transparent layer with a variety of brushes in a blue palette. I put a new transparent layer behind the blue painted layer, removed the selection, and painted from a gold palette, which showed through the remaining open spaces in the blue layer.

Sometimes we do what we want instead of what we should. Sometimes we even deeply enjoy it. I do it, you do it, and the best we can do is to remember and improve from it. We can possibly even savor the experience as a memory and a learning experience, recall it from time to time, and maybe even smile a bit in recalling it. That’s humanity for you. I’d probably say I’m more devilish than divine in this respect, but maybe I’ll learn someday.

The latest in my series of animals made of text, a seal. For the landscape, I used Inkscape’s spraypaint tool to paint with a square made with the rectangle tool.
“Pinnipeds (/ˈpɪnᵻˌpɛdz/) (from Latin pinna “fin” and pes, pedis “foot”[2]), commonly known as seals,[a] are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine mammals. They comprise the extant families Odobenidae (whose only living member is the walrus), Otariidae (the eared seals: sea lions and fur seals), and Phocidae (the earless seals, or true seals). There are 33 extant species of pinnipeds, and more than 50 extinct species have been described from fossils. While seals were historically thought to have descended from two ancestral lines, molecular evidence supports them as a monophyletic lineage (descended from one ancestral line). So @annavan (Scoyoc), a friend in the NJ Library Land circle, simultaneously made me aware of a logo contest for Libraries and Transliteracy and called me out (in the best possible way). She tweeted

I love design challenges, Libraries, and Anna, so this one was a no brainer. So the first thing I did was make sure I had a clear understanding of transliteracy and how it related to libraries, and so I did some research, starting but not ending with the ubiquitous Wikipedia entry, which gave me a good start, defining Transliteracy as:
“Transliteracy is The ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from signing and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, to digital social networks.
