So, today I decided to make a new header for the project to show the difference in the new series. I started off by importing the older blue header with the open location import tool to get just the right size. After making a text layer with my project name and choosing a font and applying kerning, I added a few transparent layers underneath it. On each of those layers I used the paintbrush or eraser and various brushes to make the marks you see here. Using the palette color selector and a built-in fiery palette was especially helpful to create a cohesive color scheme.

Abstract: In this session, I described the origins, problems, solutions, and outcomes of my daily digital sketch project at http://365sketches.org which made use of Inkscape, an open source vector design and illustration application.
I started with a famous album cover, brought it into Inkscape, converted to a vector using bitmap trace, removed everything but Paul’s face, then used it as a mask on a grunge texture. Simple technique, but I really like the result.

The latest in my series of animals made of text, a seal. For the landscape, I used Inkscape’s spraypaint tool to paint with a square made with the rectangle tool.
“Pinnipeds (/ˈpɪnᵻˌpɛdz/) (from Latin pinna “fin” and pes, pedis “foot”[2]), commonly known as seals,[a] are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine mammals. They comprise the extant families Odobenidae (whose only living member is the walrus), Otariidae (the eared seals: sea lions and fur seals), and Phocidae (the earless seals, or true seals). There are 33 extant species of pinnipeds, and more than 50 extinct species have been described from fossils. While seals were historically thought to have descended from two ancestral lines, molecular evidence supports them as a monophyletic lineage (descended from one ancestral line). This is one of the more successful pieces in the series of animals made of text. In this case, I decided to make a cat out of text. I used Inkscape, imported the silhouette of a cat, and then typed the text on top of it. I converted the text to a path, and began to shape the text to meet the edges of the silhouette in such a way as to still have it be readable. I hope you enjoy it!
