I live in a tiny studio apartment. I mean, really tiny. For the last year or so, after a major life change, I lived minimally, with a few tables, chairs, and mattresses, and have gotten some pretty honest feedback about it from many of the people who I love, and who love me.

My response is that you do what you can with what you have. But now, after having some stability in various areas of my life, such as emotional, nutritional, and spiritual, I’m ready to make my space more like me. Where does one get the various items to do this, you might ask? My answer: Ikea USA.

I’m excited about the prospect of these items bringing together the space in a sensibly cohesive way, and even more excited about not hearing my living space referred to as the crack den or a dorm room.

So, I’m hoping this poster will be a breakout hit of this series; I’ve always loved this game. Slapsies is so simple, very straightforward, and highly portable. However, it also allows for great strategy, requires determination, has poker-style emotional skills, and tests one’s endurance in such a way that it will please any hard-core gamer. It wins over players quickly with laughter, victory, fun, and it goes with you everywhere you go. It may just be the perfect game.

I’ve had a lot of bosses in my life. I’ve had bad, good and great ones. The worst ones make the best job intolerable. The best ones do some key things that I like to think make work a joy. Leaders who share their knowledge to the degree that they want you to know everything in their heads, those who cross train and develop you, are the best. Those who look forward, at issues that lie ahead, and replace or dismiss issues of little importance or value, are great ones. Those who see the workers who are struggling and find ways to pull them up and out of the muck are the leaders that I seek out. Those that put the organization, the customer, and the worker ahead of themselves in their decisions are great. Those that remember what it was to have to report and answer to someone like themselves and not take advantage of that fear are admirable. Those that remember what it was to not be in their postion and revel in the joy of their position, like a boss.

So, for keeping designer’s block low in this project, I have devised a few techniques to stay creative. The one with the most potential so far, in my opinion, is one in which I use a favorite collection, usually a book, of phrases, quotes, concepts, songs or motifs as a starting point, open to one or more random pages, and illustrate the idea that results from these random choices. In this particular case, I was using the concepts “shadow play” and “cut paper” from the book Universal Principles of Design, a wonderful collection of key ideas and innovations in design. I placed a rectangle on the page, and drew a heart on top of it with the pencil tool. I selected both and used the path difference operation. I duplicated the path, moved it a bit, made it gray, and applied transparency and blur to give a shadow. I tweaked the color with the gradient tool and called it done.

So I’m fit. I have a pretty well established nutritional set of guidelines that focus on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts and beans. However, a big part of my philosophy is that if you want it, you should eat it, or else you spend your day thinking about it, instead of simply enjoying it, perhaps until you explode into and finish a cheap box of whatever. This extends to a lot of different foods that people label as bad, like cupcakes. Cupcakes are delicious! In moderation, they can fit into anyone’s nutritional goals. Make them special, infrequent, and especially tasty. I’m suggesting you give up pre-packaged Tastycakes that you might consider eating every day, and instead, every once in a while, go deep in, indulge, and either make or buy a decadent cupcake with rich mousse or frosting or cream. Savor each bite slowly, letting the umami of the dark chocolate melt into your tongue. And know the calories, count the calories, log the calories.

I recently got a gift that I thought was incredibly thoughtful, insightful, and a key indicator to the giver’s state of mind and grace. I’ve always loved bamboo, in part because of its aesthetics, and in part because of what it represents to me, ideologically. It is quick-growing, bright, colorful, and overtaking. It can become incredibly tall, grows in a large family, and provides a lovely shade. It is evergreen, hardy, and resilient. It can be used to build, is very easy to replenish, and is highly recyclable. It is strong, bends without snapping, and has an amazing temper. It is quiet, refined, and calming. It can be used to make furniture, paper, buildings and anything else that wood does, without the preciousness or scarcity of wood and all that entails. Thanks so much to Katy for the gift, it is perfect, and I hope that this is some small indication of what it, and you, mean to me.
