LeMasney Consulting is now offering a branding starter package for individuals and companies

You keep seeing beautiful, informational web sites. What about your own site? Do you have one? Can you update it? Are you happy with your online presence? When you are just getting started with that presence, the answer is often no. Our small business starter package can help.

To feel supported in your online presence, you will need a few things for the digital side, and a few things on the real-life side. I have helped thousands of people with technology, and I have learned a lot about what my clients want. Take a look at the Testimonials page for more on what people are saying about their experience with me, then consider my Small Business Starter Package to get your own great online presence!

We want to make having a great online business presence easy! I’m excited to help you! If this package does not cover all that you need, fear not! Maybe you need a graphics package. Maybe you are looking for help with a podcast. Maybe you already have a site and just need to migrate to an easier system. I’m flexible, and we can do everything that you want at a reasonable price. Too much? Too little? Let us know what you need, and I assure you that I will do everything I can to get you set up at the right price.

Does this describe you?

  • You are building your idea somewhere in the world, but you need to build your online presence too.
  • You want to truly own the message you are putting out, down to the colors and fonts.
  • You are an individual who wants to focus on ideas, not technologies.
  • You have tried other solutions, and they were too expensive or too difficult.
  • You do not have an endless budget for your web presence, but you know it is important to be out there.
  • You just want it taken care of, and ASAP.

How long will it take, what will I get, and how much does it cost?

I want to help you in your new task. For just $500 (10 hours at the standard rate), you’ll get the following (20 hours estimated work — that’s half price!). I’ll help you to:

  • define your brand
  • purchase and set up your domain with a domain host and email
  • create a wordmark based logo
  • set up your new website with a great content management system
  • add a beautiful theme from a curated set for business owners like you
  • carry out SEO (search engine optimization) best practices
  • Responsive design for mobile audiences
  • 5 edited photos/images of your location, products, or staff

    • your first news post,
    • your first offer post
    • your first featured post
    • A testimonials page

Editing order, publishing dates and sticky posts in WordPress

A client asked me recently how to affect the ways that posts show chronologically in WordPress. By default, WordPress shows the latest publish post first, the next most recent post next, and so on. This is affected mostly by the date at the time the post was published is set to the date of the post by default, even though the post may exist elsewhere in time chronologically. This is especially true if you are moving old content from another source to a new WordPress site.

How to affect chronology of posts in WordPress

There are at least two ways to do this. In this case we are just talking about posts, as WordPress pages use a different way of ordering.
  1. Edit a post.
  2. In the area where it says publish/update, look for “Published On:” where you can edit the publish date. The most recent dated posts will show first, the next most recent next, etc. This will allow you to set articles from 2005 as having been published then.
  3. In your particular case, you may also want an especially important post to show up first regardless of date, and so you have a second option:

How to make a post sticky in WordPress

  • In the same publish area, look for the “visibility:” area, where you can set whether a post is visible or not.
  • In this area, you can also set a post as “sticky” which allows it to show first until you turn off the option.
  • Click on the checkbox next to “Stick this post to the front page” and it will show as the first post until you change the setting back.
  • Make sure to click ok and update, or the change will not be saved.

A Special Reminder from The Computer Learning Center at Ewing

CLC Tips & Tricks Program April 6

“My 10 Favorite Free Graphics Applications”

Ewing, NJ:   Next Tuesday, April 6, John LeMasney, Manager of Technology Training at Rider University in  Lawrenceville, will present “My 10 Favorite Free Graphics Applications” at the Computer Learning Center’s latest “Computer Tips and Tricks” program. This free program will take place in the Ewing Senior and Community Center, 999 Lower Ferry Road.  It will be preceded by a question and answer session during which the audience can direct computer questions to the CLC’s all-volunteer faculty.  The CLC “Computer Tips and Tricks” programs are presented as a public service on the first Tuesday of each month.  No prior registration is required.

““You’ll never go back to paying hundreds of dollars for name brand software after you see what you can do with these 10 free applications,” says LeMasney. “While I was personally raised on Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Corel DRAW!, they’ve got nothing on these free and open source tools. I plan to demonstrate how to find great, free tools to design advertisements, posters, layouts, images, and logos, and I’ll explore tools that allow you to work in photographic, three-dimensional, vector, bitmap modes.”  LeMasney will also discuss the rise in popularity of open source software and what he describes as “the free yet fantastic alternatives to commercial applications.”

For further information about the April 6 program, courses or directions, call 609-882-5086, 609-883-1776, Ext. 6205 or visit the SeniorNet web site at www.ewingsnet.com.

44 of 365 is a glowing deep sea creature #inkscape

Glowing deep sea creature - LeMasney Consulting
Glowing deep sea creature – LeMasney Consulting

So this was pretty straightforward. I took the pencil tool (set to spiro paths and shape: triangle in) and dropped some wavy lines, which I combined into  single path. I duplicated the path about 4 times, adding additional levels of blur effect to each duplicate. In the lowest duplicate, I also applied several outsets, enlarging and broadening the path with the greatest amount of blur. I gave this duplicate a deep blue tint. Finally, I added a deep dark navy square as the bottom most part of the image. I wouldn’t want to run into this thing.
