In case anyone still doesn’t know, I’m leaving my long-term position at Rider at the end of this week to begin work at Princeton University. So I was talking on the phone, and my friend Marianne stopped by, and in her typical polite fashion, to keep from interrupting me, she made me a note and showed me through the window. It said simply, on an 8.5×11 sheet, in Sharpie “Good Luck (smiley) Have fun! i will miss you (frownie).” It was a beautiful, simple sentiment, and was more than the object, but the act itself.  I wanted to capture the beautiful simple sentiment in the note and share it with you. Thank you, Marianne. I’ll miss you, and Rider, dearly.

I used GIMP to make an idea I had earlier today as I was slashing through piles of email that have less and less relevance to me . It fit nicely into the 7-5-7 form which I forgot is not the haiku form, which is 5-7-5. DUH! In case you’ve not heard, I recently resigned from my long-term position at Rider to take a similar position at Princeton University. And so, all those emails that might have had me jumping a month ago are a lot easier to pass on, respond quickly to, or simply (ninja vanishing sounds).

Well, this finishes series one. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all you who supported the project. Special thanks must go to Janie Hermann and the Princeton Arts Council for a very fun show and opening at Princeton Public Library. I also very specifically want to thank Beth, Julie, Andy, Ana, Angel, Bobbi, Brian, Bryan, Roch & Chris, Carol, the St. Ephrems crew, Darlena, Dave, Deep, Erik, Eric, Fred, Geoff, the Milnes, Jo and BCUG, PPCUG, Karen, Laverne, Lynette, Khurt, Missie, Meshell, Bob and Sandra, Michael, Nancy, Paul, Shannon, Tim and Suzanna, Suzanne, Val, Princeton University, Peter, Craig, Sam, Amy, Shaun, Sean, Robert, everyone at PPL, a lot of people at Rider, and most likely you, reader, for daily inspiration. So just a few nights ago, I was giving a talk about 365 sketches and it’s origins to the Princeton PC Users Group, and a friend of mine from Linux Users Group in Princeton, Kim, was in the audience. There’s a sequence in my talk where I show a whale deep underwater, preceded by a sheet of web 2.0 logos collected as a way of showing the style of web 2.0 logos. At any rate, when Kim saw this progression, he said that he thought at first that I was going to show a Nascar whale, a whale covered in logos. Yhis struck me as funny, and it was exactly the sort of thing I might do. I decided to do it with a cheetah, in order to stay in the analogic idea of advertising and fast vehicles. So, here it is, and thanks very much to Kim for the spark!

Abstract: John LeMasney will be presenting on the basics of good graphic design with an emphasis on technology tools and resources. In the session we’ll discuss planning your project, devising your message, choosing your colors, picking your fonts, acquiring images, respecting copyright, sketching your layout, finding great resources, choosing your tools, and bringing it all together into great designs for most any purpose.

Commentary and notes:

Your presentation was wonderful. I especially liked the contrast between the topic slides and the demonstration slides. When you were using the topic slides you spoke directly to the audience and the information on the slides did not distract from you, the presenter. Then when you had a presentation slide up you had the audience focus on the material on the screen. The resources you provided will be a great help to me in the redesign of professional website. – Presentation attendee.
