So, those of you who are friends of mine on Facebook (lemasney) saw a status after my recent night flight home from Orlando. I said that I had seen an amazing lightning storm outside of the plane from a distance and it has haunted me in a very good way ever since. The brilliant colors, bright lights, and bulbous clouds has a real impact on my imagination. We were far enough away that we were never in any danger, as far as I could tell. We were also close enough so that I could see the enormity of the storm. It was right on eye level and it was mesmerizing. I tried desperately three times to capture it on video or in a photo, but it just escaped my lens. It would never have matched my imagination anyway, which is why I love Inkscape. I’m able to make whatever I can see in my mind in the finest detail out of whole cloth. đŸ™‚

So here is another collaboration with my great and longtime friend, Sam Pinola. Sam sent me a bitmap traced SVG of his band, and we discussed over email the idea of his band fighting Godzilla, and possibly a 3D movie effect. In the end, turning Sam into a city wrecking, bass playing iconic monster won out for me, and I modified his SVG to make  this image. I hope Sam likes it, and I hope you like it too!

This is the result of a short collaboration between Sam Pinola and I during a recent visit to his house. We sat together and brought in images and discussed techniques and revised and played, and this is what we came up with. Thanks for the help, Sam!

So today’s post was just about using a few different tools in Inkscape to create some interesting effects. First and foremost, I saw the stitch sub paths live path effect as a great way to create ridges of a cake cup and so it was. I made a shadow with a blurred ellipse. I used the calligraphy tool to create the cake and the icing. I used the dot tool feature of the pencil for the confetti sprinkles. I created the cherry with the ellipse tool and the node editor, and the stem with the Bezier tool. I added some highlights for the frosting with the calligraphy tool, then blurred them a bit.

A lot of fun to make!

One of my favorite people in the world, and someone who has participated in 365Sketches before (join in at http://www.facebook.com/365sketches) recently gave me some insight into gender differences and diversity awareness. Upon indicating that I was going to a certain location, and that if she wanted to go it was quite walkable, Sarah Badawy, without blinking said, “Well, I’m a girl, and that’s not the sort of thing we do. Just saying”. She was being facetious, of course, but I immediately thanked her for contributing to the project, to which she laughed a bit.

This sketch is really just a simple case of text manipulation, but it’s one of the most fun things to do in Inkscape. Thanks to Sarah for letting me know about girls. Just sayin.

Ask any of my esteemed colleagues on the TEDxNJLibraries team what my role is and, as likely as not, they’ll say that I’m the TEDxNJLibs WebMonkey. I do most of the updates on our site at and have been one of the champions for the solution and methods for our site. I’m proud of the work, and proud of the title, very much a term of endearment.

With this in mind, I wanted to do a painting in Inkscape to have a realistic rendering with harsh lines of a monkey. In the background you can see some code from our site, which is WordPress based. I guess if I was being true to that I’d have copied in the PHP rather than the rendered XHTML, but you get the picture. I started with a few photos of monkeys and used them as a base for building the face with the calligraphy tool, working with the eyedropper tool and using the original photo as a palette, but after I had the basic structure, I decided to remove the photo and build up the image from my mind. I especially love the way the sparkle and color come through in the eyes. It reminds me of the way I light up inside when I get a chance to add new content to the site. đŸ˜‰
