This is actually Sunday’s post, even though it’s late in the day, but this was the first opportunity I had to be online today. I have posted this elsewhere, and I feel very strongly about the short sightedness of cutting Library programming, databases, and other funding. I understand that budgets must be kept, but it seems like other costs, like million dollar state run college coach salaries could be reduced or removed before dismantling the beneficial programs and positions of many people, because as many have said, that’s a hell of a lot of books. Support your local Library — they need you right now more than ever.

This image was meant to be a rendering of a memory of sultry summer mornings where the heat of the coming day meets the wetness in tall grass and makes for a bit of fog. I made a single leafy reed with the ellipse tool and the calligraphy tool, then set it as a brush by copying it and using the pencil tool set to shape: from clipboard. I added some tall grasses with the pencil tool set to shape: triangle in.  I applied a color jitter to all of the shapes after setting them to a solid dark leafy green. I added a blurry gradient for the background, and a blurry dark green rectangle in the foreground to add some depth. I added the text, dupliacted it and blurred the duplicate for a soft foggy effect. With snow on the way here in New Jersey, I’m looking forward to seeing the summer morning fog again.

Abstract: In this workshop on the basics of visual design best practices, we’ll examine examples and counterexamples of great design, the basics of layout, simplified color theory, rules for fonts and legibility, images and photographs, designing stamps vs pages vs slideshows vs billboards, copyright and creative commons, and free and open source design tools (photo manipulation, illustration, layout, catalogs, and quick editors).

Event: Collaborative Work Environments for NJ State Library Staff Development Day

Abstract: Technology Tools for Workplace Collaboration. In this 1 hour presentation, we will look at a wealth of technology tools for working together on projects, even though we might not be in the same room, building, or county. Videoconferencing, whiteboarding, document collaboration, and groupware will all be discussed, and applications for workers will be suggested.
