UK Dogs at Christmas
UK Dogs at Christmas Infographic

This is in response to Janie Hermann introducing Michael Porter to my work when he was looking for an infographic, which I appreciated. However, Michael noted rightly that this project did not have any examples of infographics which is a very specific way of presenting data graphically, usually to represent statistics, simplify concepts, or illustrate a key point. I’ve done more than a few in my work, but this project didn’t have any, so I made this to show how fun, wacky and effective Inkscape can be for this kind of work. Those lucky dogs.

165 of 365 is an apology to all of you in #Inkscape #design #sorry

An apology
An apology

I don’t have an excuse. You all deserve better. I know we’ve had this conversation before, but I promise you I’ll try to get more sleep tonight and the next night and so on. Let’s start over today. Right now. This moment is new for us. Really. Zzzzzzzz.

Also, this is a response to Dan Wadlinger who recently asked me to create a grunge styled sketch, and while I have some others in the silo, this was especially inspired by him. I used a rust texture in conjunction of the letterforms to create a rough looking overlay in an urban grunge style. Thanks, Dan!

162 of 365 is a #library wish revisited in #Inkscape #typography

When in doubt, ask a librarian
When in doubt, ask a librarian

So, you may think you saw this design recently, but in fact this is an altered version of that design. One of my favorite librarians Marie Radford made a suggestion that made a lot of sense to me:

I’d like to see a slightly different message. How about “ask a librarian” instead of “visit your library”? Two reasons, 1) highlights the contribution of librarians, 2) opens up possibilities for virtual reference, phone, txt, facebook, etc. to get help rather than just the physical library.

It made perfect sense to me, Marie, after you brought the logic of it to light. If I had thought about it just a little bit (or a lot) more, I might have had the insight to make that jump, but my view was limited. I am thrilled and thankful that you cared enough about the message and the design to make the suggestion. It’s people like you who have helped me the most in this project to grow not only in my design, but in my worldview.

Save NJ LIbraries – LeMasney Consulting

Save NJ LIbraries – LeMasney Consulting

This is actually Sunday’s post, even though it’s late in the day, but this was the first opportunity I had to be online today. I have posted this elsewhere, and I feel very strongly about the short sightedness of cutting Library programming, databases, and other funding. I understand that budgets must be kept, but it seems like other costs, like million dollar state run college coach salaries could be reduced or removed before dismantling the beneficial programs and positions of many people, because as many have said, that’s a hell of a lot of books. Support your local Library — they need you right now more than ever.
