I recently came across a detailed DIY article on creating a coffee can lantern, and thought it was a great opportunity to see one’s design in a different, ahem, light. So I imagined what I might like to see flickering and dancing at 10 pm at night, and this is what I saw. I’m looking forward to cutting into the tin and seeing this bird fly a little. 🙂

So, after the TEDxNJLIbraries event on May 7th, I was at the post event dinner with the cast and crew, and I was sitting next to Girl+Camera LLC herself, M. Elizabeth Williams.

I gave a preview of my upcoming show pieces after the event ended while the tapas and wine tasting was going on.  She had seen my piece called “Form for disgruntled designers” in which I faithfully recorded all of the ways in which designers are often given short shrift in projects because many of the project leaders feel like okay design and great design and no design at all are the same thing, and are all effortless, and should all be free.

Elizabeth (who did our event as an in-kind sponsor, essentially for free) really loved the design and said that she’d love to have one about photography. I told her that my project, in great part, was about requests and fulfillment, and that I’d love to make it for her. I hope you enjoy it, Elizabeth!

Every week, a certain close friend does a status update, usually early on Mondays, about how they hate Mondays. So noted, pally.

So, I threatened to make a sketch about it, and she wondered where it was. I hope she decides to use it well.

Even if she doesn’t, it’s CC Share alike, like all my sketches so feel free to use it on coffee mugs, tshirts, towels, you know, anything you want to use to share your feelings about Mondays.

Although, I warn you, you likely like Mondays more than my dear friend.

66 of 365 is a heart in dark chocolate in #inkscape

Today’s sketch in Inkscape is a very shiny heart in dark chocolate, that might have been more appropriate earlier this month (on the 14th), but I like chocolate anytime. Especially dark chocolate, like 80% cacao. Yum! At any rate, this is a fairly simple construction, rectangles for the face and back side of the chocolate, a rectangle for the inset shape on the chocolate, a thick stroked heart shape made with ellipses and Bezier tool, then unioned. I used the high gloss technique here for the heart, but I feel now it’s a bit shinier than reality would render it. I still like the effect, however. I made some chocolate crumbs with the pencil tool set to shape: triangle out, and also with ctrl-clicks to make dots. Finally, I put it on a red velvet gradient. Hope you enjoy it!

Using a CC licensed image from OpenPhoto.net (photo © pinar for openphoto.net CC:Attribution-ShareAlike) I put together this image of a woman enjoying coffee from a teacup. I started by finding the woman’s face on OpenPhoto, which I imported into Inkscape, bitmap-traced and then edited down. Then, I added a path and sculpted it into a coffee cup. Then, using the pencil tool set to shape: ellipse, I made some steamy translucent wisps. Then, I added the letters on the cup, converted to path, combined, and bent with the LPE: bend. I put gradients just about everywhere: face, cup, text, background.
