We buried mom today. If there’s one thing that stands out about my common experience with her, it is a mutual appreciation of great food. She was a wonderful and deeply resourceful chef, but she also loved to go out to have a great meal. As time went on and especially after Dad died, we spent most of our time together going out to eat. She would always enjoy comfort foods, and the easier to chew the better. She noted the success of a place by how well they cooked chopped sirloin with gravy and onions with a side of mashed potatoes. I plan to celebrate her memory with that meal often in the future.

As regular followers know, I lost my mom on Sunday. I imagine a lot of my remaining 2010 sketches will be influenced in some way by her memory. She was a fantastic cook, and had glorious Sunday roast beef dinners with 6 vegetables and homemade gravy. She taught me a lot about the art of seasoning, and I’ll never forget it.

I really love Inkscape’s clip and mask tools in the object menu. It allows you to have clean crisp lines like those you find in a font come together with a wildly sketchy line from a wacom tablet and make a beautiful, interesting combination with very little effort.

Autumnal Maple Leaf
Autumnal Maple Leaf

I made this maple leaf using Inkscape and my Wacom tablet. The chills and strong winds of fall are really coming on now here in the Northeast US, and I wanted to capture some of the great sights I’ve seen lately.

This is another sketch in Inkscape using a Wacom Tablet. There’s a load of symbolism here, I’m almost sure of it. 🙂
