Ampersands (&) are a beautiful typographic creation. I found out last year that ampersands combine the letters e and t, or “et”, which is “and” in French. I wanted to show the symbol in a sensual, undulating form.

I really love typography play. Inkscape is my favorite tool, bar none, for this. I do it all the time. Enter a piece of text with the text tool and choose and apply a font that begins to speak to the end design in your mind. I chose ballpark as a starting point. Then select the text, and do a path/union operation (ctrl-shift-plus), which turns the text into a single editable path. Then use the node tool to tweak, move, resize, and shape the edges of your text until you have the shape that you want. I added a dot to the “i” inside of one of my flourishes, and joined it with the existing path using a second union operation.  In this particular case, I added a rectangle with a gradient to create a vignette in the background, and applied a beveling filter to the text to give it some depth.

So, for keeping designer’s block low in this project, I have devised a few techniques to stay creative. The one with the most potential so far, in my opinion, is one in which I use a favorite collection, usually a book, of phrases, quotes, concepts, songs or motifs as a starting point, open to one or more random pages, and illustrate the idea that results from these random choices. In this particular case, I was using the concepts “shadow play” and “cut paper” from the book Universal Principles of Design, a wonderful collection of key ideas and innovations in design. I placed a rectangle on the page, and drew a heart on top of it with the pencil tool. I selected both and used the path difference operation. I duplicated the path, moved it a bit, made it gray, and applied transparency and blur to give a shadow. I tweaked the color with the gradient tool and called it done.

This image was fairly simple to do in Inkscape. I created a single line, duplicated it, curved the line, and repeated, increasing the curve each time. Once I had the first ‘module’, I duplicated and rotated it until I had a hexagonal shape. I played a bit with palette by making each module a different color, created a vignetted background, and moved the hexagonal shape off-center to add interest.
