One of my favorite animals, chosen by Linus Torvalds as a representative ideological animal for Linux, popularized as the plush penguin named Tux. This is the latest animal in my text-based animals series.

The latest in my series of animals made of text, a seal. For the landscape, I used Inkscape’s spraypaint tool to paint with a square made with the rectangle tool.

“Pinnipeds (/ˈpɪnᵻˌpɛdz/) (from Latin pinna “fin” and pes, pedis “foot”[2]), commonly known as seals,[a] are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine mammals. They comprise the extant families Odobenidae (whose only living member is the walrus), Otariidae (the eared seals: sea lions and fur seals), and Phocidae (the earless seals, or true seals). There are 33 extant species of pinnipeds, and more than 50 extinct species have been described from fossils. While seals were historically thought to have descended from two ancestral lines, molecular evidence supports them as a monophyletic lineage (descended from one ancestral line). Pinnipeds belong to the order Carnivora and their closest living relatives are bears and musteloids (weasels, raccoons, skunks and red pandas), having diverged about 50 million years ago.” – Pinniped – Wikipedia from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinniped

This rhino is the latest in the text based animals series, a major thread in the 365 sketches project. Apologies for the late post. This is for Saturday. Another will be posted in a few minutes for Sunday.

My friend Beth passed on a great article by Kevin Kelly in the New York Times about technology as part of homeschooling curricula. I did not agree with all of them, but one of the concepts that he discovered stood out as a great one, especially for someone like me — this is why I prefer open source software, like Inkscape.

Kitty made out of text

This is one of the more successful pieces in the series of animals made of text. In this case, I decided to make a cat out of text. I used Inkscape, imported the silhouette of a cat, and then typed the text on top of it. I converted the text to a path, and began to shape the text to meet the edges of the silhouette in such a way as to still have it be readable. I hope you enjoy it!

I got a recent comment from a design student on Flickr who said that while he liked my work, he was being asked in classes to do something similar, but without altering the letterforms. While I’m not sure how recognizability happens with those restrictions, I decided to try to do this chicken while keeping the original letterforms relatively unmodified. I really love the result, and will definitely try it again!
