29 of 365 is a sun trying to break through the clouds #inkscape

Sun breaking through

This was a quick study. I used the shape tool to make the sun, then added eyes and mouth with the pencil tool. I put in a blue background block, and then using the ellipse tool, I made a cloud with several circles. To create a single shape, I selected the circles, and did a path union operation. Finally, I added a blur to the clouds. UPDATE: I decided to give some shimmer to the clouds. I added a gradient from blue to yellow towards the sun for the stroke on the cloud, and gave a low layered duplicate for the sun shape a slight blur for a glow effect.

28 of 365 is a friendly little cyclops

Happy cyclops

Pushing my quota for absurdity in this series, I decided to use Inkscape today in order to do some collage work. By taking three images from MorgueFile.com (a little girl looking over a wall, a made-up eye, and a mouth full of braces) and bitmap tracing them, I was able to make this happy little cyclops. The most work was done to remove the nodes from the originals in order to make way for the layering of the new elements, such as taking out the original face of the little girl. I masked off part of the mouth with braces, to get rid of the hard edges from the original photo.

Viva la Evolucion

I made this cutie in Inkscape by creating an ellipse, adding 3 smaller tan ellipses within it, creating ellipse based ears and eyes, and then creating a mouth out of a round capped path, which I duplicated, resized and flipped to make half a nose, then the rest of the nose. With a duplicated three node polygon, I made the shards of fur on the sides of her face, which I mirrored for the other side. I added a jungle background square, and called it done. Then, I thought better of it, added some text, and really called it done.

26 of 365 is a tiger with the head of a woman #inkscape

Lady Sphinx

Today’s post is a sphinx like creature, a tiger with the head of a woman. It was simple enough to do in Inkscape. I pulled a public domain photo of both the woman and the tiger from The Commons on Flickr. Then in Inkscape, I imported and bitmap-traced both of them, placed them on top of each other with a strategically placed white polygon between the face and the tiger to create cover for the still-present Tiger’s face. Then, I added a solid color to the face and a gradient blend to the tiger and wall, which ends up looking like foliage when it’s green.

Woman enjoying coffee from a teacup

Using a CC licensed image from OpenPhoto.net (photo © pinar for openphoto.net CC:Attribution-ShareAlike) I put together this image of a woman enjoying coffee from a teacup. I started by finding the woman’s face on OpenPhoto, which I imported into Inkscape, bitmap-traced and then edited down. Then, I added a path and sculpted it into a coffee cup. Then, using the pencil tool set to shape: ellipse, I made some steamy translucent wisps. Then, I added the letters on the cup, converted to path, combined, and bent with the LPE: bend. I put gradients just about everywhere: face, cup, text, background.

A worried little boy with spiky hair

So this is mostly dissected ellipses, with some shaped paths for hair, finished with a set of clipped rectangles for teeth, a shirt and a background. I was inspired by some graffiti I saw online, but this was much more straightforward than that. Related: Inkscape is coming out with a spraypaint tool in 0.48 — can’t wait to see how it works.
