My good friend Robert Mangold reacted to my recent adbuster about Burger King with the thought that he expected to see a commando heart ready to fight. I loved his idea, and may still directly sketch that out, but it inspired me here to make a heart attack more in the vein of what he was describing than what most of us think about with the phrase “heart attack”. Thanks for the inspiration, Rob, as always! If you like this image, please share it. If you use it, please attribute me, and thanks! (cc-by lemasney)

Cancer (June 22-July 23)

This is for my good friend Angel who has asked me to do some sketch work regarding the signs of the zodiac. It’s amazing to listen to her understanding and beliefs about the reliability of the zodiac’s predictions about one’s personality. I’ve always been interested in the interpretation of who I’m supposed to be according to these expectations, and I have to say I think I’m a lot like the profile. This is my sign, I’m a cancer.

Endless cycle
Endless cycle

So this really came out of the idea that I wanted to make a limo style tandem bike. I found an interesting, simple piece of bike clip art, and place a few of them together, wheel to wheel, and called it done. Then, like so many ‘finished’ things, I had a what if moment, where I wondered if I could get the bikes to line up in a circle. When I realized it was possible, and did it, I decided to make riders. Then, I thought it would be interesting to have two riders on each bike. Finally, I decided to fill in the central space with the jumper. Special thanks to the creators of the Parkour font.

Media workflow

So I thought that today I’d show you another way of using Inkscape — as a workflow design tool, and as a way of working out physical ideas visually in two dimensions. This is the current 7.1 media setup in our living room, though it has not changed much in the last few years. I’m really excited about the new things that are coming up, especially GoogleTV, and so maybe soon I’ll sketch out my new ideal living room media workflow.
