So I’m at a Bed and Breakfast in Ocean City, NJ (Ocean City Mansion, 4th and Central, nice place) and for the choice of coffee mug at breakfast, there was an eclectic set to choose from. I proudly chose a mug with the word Princess on it, because, well, I did. I decided to make today’s sketch as a remembrance.

This sketch was a commission from one of my strongest supporters, Janie Hermann, for the ALA 2012 Conference Battledecks competition.

“Battledecks is not for the faint of heart. It is a nerve-wracking event where those competing must create a coherent presentation from a deck of slides that they have never seen before. This is truly the perfect way to end your conference experience as these courageous individuals compete for the glory of being crowned the next champ.” )

“After some thought, my solution was a modified form of Battledecks, the legendary form of “PowerPoint Karaoke” that has been especially popular in library conference circles.   Drawing on my own experience as a participant, watching others, and some great advice from fellow librarian Andy Woodworth, I pitched the idea to Dan.   After some initial conversation, we worried a true Battledecks might be a little overwhelming for their first effort; in addition, Jen and I were worried about prepping slidedecks for three classes even though the presentations were going to be shorter than a typical Battledecks sesssion.    After a little research, I found a modified version from teacher Tom Woodward that seemed to be the perfect balance of creative thinking and enough structure to push our students but not send them over a cliff.” – Battledecks: It’s Not Just for Librarians! | The Unquiet Librarian, https://goo.gl/6grSsh

I like stability. I like knowing where I stand. I like knowing what a given situation is, and know the likely outcome. I wanted to make an image of a person who knows where they stand, who has firm roots and would be hard to surprise, set off balance, or mistreat. I want to be this.

I have become incredibly interested in my personal health since April, and one of the ways that this has manifested is that I became knowledgable about culinary skills. When you prepare your own food, you have far more control over what you put into your body. I have always been enamored with the endless shows on Food Network which highlight a chef’s knife skills as a point of supremacy in a contest. The shows do not do a very good job of explaining what it means to have good knife skills. After some research, I learned about some basic culinary knife cuts, and decided to learn them myself by reading about, contemplating, then designing an infographic about them in preparation for doing the cuts myself.  With a sharp knife, and fresh vegetables or other firm foods, they are fairly easy to do.

This is a fork sketch, drawn using the word “food”. I’m a foodie, what else can I say?

I really try to give my audience what they seem to want, and when I look at my stats, it shows that they want more decorative Stormtrooper masks, which I’ve done before, but was not entirely happy with the result. I decided in this case to do it in a simplified style, and to specifically mimic the beautiful Day of the Dead style of mask decoration, another very popular treatment these days. It’s fun stuff, certainly, and I hope that people like it.
