This came out of a conversation with a very good friend about relationships and how some people really work together in couples in such a way that they increase in energy and explosive potential when they’re near each other. I personally prefer a calming relationship with others — I seek out people who are happy, productive, and encouraging, but I know a few people who seek out the explosive, the challenging, on purpose. In a way, I think of my relationship with you, the audience for 365sketches, as having explosive potential. With each feedback loop, each connection, each suggestion, I get blown up into a new way of thinking, and detonations of new ideas. Thanks!

Overhead power lines

I’ve always had an unmistakable inexplicable affection for the visuals, structure, and purpose of powerlines. They remind me of huge motherly robotic figures, feeding us, feeding us. I thought it would be fun to focus on the quiet benevolent giants in a sketch, and I thank you for indulging me. I hope this one’s connected to a wind turbine, just saying.

Hey all. This is a 365 request from my very good friend Janie. She sent me a funny and exciting picture of someone very dear to her going down a slide, and I decided to take it somewhere different in Inkscape. I was especially inspired for this image by the one below, one that I use to discuss sometimes non-ambiguous emotion in design.

86 of 365 are 9 of my favorite technology sets in #inkscape

9 important technologies
9 important technologies

Hey, all. I decided that today I’d celebrate some of my favorite technologies. IconDock at http://icondock.com made this easy on me, as they distribute vector based icons for a whole boatload of social media and technology companies in a icon pack. However, that’s not what you see here. I took my own favorite icons from that set, sized them up, converted to bitmap (ctrl-m), bitmap traced them to get an outline, and then aligned the outlines into a 9 up grid. Then the fun began. Using the calligraphy tool in Inkscape, along with the eyedropper tool and the original icons, I would use the eyedropper to pick colors from the originals, then apply the colors in a painterly fashion on top of the outlines I had created. After I was satisfied with all of the color, I brought the outlines back to the front. Really loved this process!

Special thanks to Robert Lackie for inviting me, and both Robert and Kathleen Pierce for co-authoring.  Generation M is an important topic to consider, and I feel that Robert’s book does a great job of examining the topic.
