In case anyone still doesn’t know, I’m leaving my long-term position at Rider at the end of this week to begin work at Princeton University. So I was talking on the phone, and my friend Marianne stopped by, and in her typical polite fashion, to keep from interrupting me, she made me a note and showed me through the window. It said simply, on an 8.5×11 sheet, in Sharpie “Good Luck (smiley) Have fun! i will miss you (frownie).” It was a beautiful, simple sentiment, and was more than the object, but the act itself.  I wanted to capture the beautiful simple sentiment in the note and share it with you. Thank you, Marianne. I’ll miss you, and Rider, dearly.

So Rider’s Recreation Programs on Facebook announced a t-shirt design contest. I decided to put this in as an entry. I have to say, I was a little perplexed about what to do besides text because the contest didn’t have a lot of direction. Which sports are being played? Who would be wearing the shirt? The Athletes? People who buy them? When is the championship, and what is at stake? Any of those answers would have given me a bit more visual influence to go on, but as it was, they asked me to “be creative” and I tried.

Laura Hyatt, who is basically synonymous in my mind with sustainable practice at Rider University, recently approached me about a cool project. She is looking to emulate successful classroom sustainability efforts in other universities, and asked me if I could help with certification branding. I looked at some of her examples, and made these. By demonstrating that in your classroom you do things like use refillable reusable beverage containers, turn off lights, do little or no printing, provide materials electronically, practice sustainability with texts and assignments, and use the outdoors and locality in your curriculum, you gain points on a standard scale. The more points you get, the higher the certification you can meet. I’m hoping to have my Digital Media Communication class be the first Emerald certified class at Rider University. I am now co-teaching a graduate level course in the Communication track of the MA in Organizational Leadership program at Rider University. The course, COMM 563, is Digital Media Communication. In the class we focus on the issues, concepts, and problems of organizational communication using digital media. The course uses WordPress as a learning and posting platform, and participants learn how to develop effective publishing skills, integrating various digital media, and developing an audience for their brand.

January Faculty Development Days 2011

In January of 2011, I was able to propose and deliver three sessions for a twice-a-year event at Rider that allows for focused faculty development at Rider University. My sessions were: 10 technologies Faculty should know about, co-presented with Shaun Holland, a session on the upcoming rollout of Blackboard 9.1 at Rider, and finally, an overview of Wimba Pronto, delivered primarily by Shaun Holland.
