“Now, at 77, Gwendolyn Brooks, perhaps our greatest living poet, has been chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the 1994 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities. She will speak today in Washington and next week in Chicago. This is the highest honor the federal government bestows for intellectual achievement in the humanities. It was given because she has

Second goal reached

I weighed myself today to a special treat: 240 pounds, which was my second goal from 295 to 260 to 240 to 220 to 200. I am finally starting to really *feel* different, instead of relying on the scale to tell me I *am* different. And that’s a very welcomed change.

Love, love, love all of you for helping me to get there. ♡♡♡

This a Haiku in syllabic form only; In formal Haiku, the words should paint a picture, using concrete sensory imagery, and move the reader to be in the created space for a moment. As it is, I just liked the rhythm that the syllabic form (5-7-5) lends to the idea of acting against the wrongs that we find in life.

So Phil Shapiro, a regular commenter and visitor to this project, suggested a sketch for a volunteer project that promotes play. That’s right — an organization to make sure that play is on the minds of Takoma Park visitors. I love it so much I’d like to propose it for my own town of Ewing, NJ. I’m always looking for ways in which happiness can be increased on a larger scale; I’m deeply interested in studies and stats about happiness and how it is recorded and shared. Hint: Happiness is not usually associated/concurrent with money. I’d love to see the effects of citywide play adoption on happiness.

At any rate, Phil asked me to design a bumper sticker for the newish organization, and I was more than happy to oblige. Below is an example of their current branding. I’m hoping maybe next time I’ll get a shot at helping them to relaunch their entire brand. 🙂

203 of 365 is about bumper cars

Childhood summers
Bumper cars

A simple enough piece to create, this is really about poetry and color. I loved summers in Ocean City as a kid. I really loved Gillian’s Wonderland, and take my boys there now. My favorite thing in all of summer was the bumper cars. The very particular aromas of electrocuted copper and steel, the quick and dirty socialization where strangers were able to laugh like old friends, the absurd tragedy of the pile of out of service cars, and the sadness when the electricity stopped flowing through the little curved wires. I loved those things.
