43 of 365 is a birthday wish #GIMP

Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!

So, Janie Hermann and another couple of friends have birthdays today. I just wanted to make a special commemoration to her and the rest. I’m happy to have you around!

40 of 365 is a photo manipulated mouth

Don't just sit there with your teeth in your mouth
Don’t just sit there with your teeth in your mouth

This is another in the series of predetermined captions. Nancy McMillin was kind enough to suggest the phrase “Don’t just sit there with your teeth in your mouth” and this is almost exactly what I pictured when I read the line.

In the GIMP, I brought in a picture of myself, and a picture of some gnarly teeth. I selected my jaw from the photo, then cut and pasted it as a new layer. I placed the teeth behind the hole where my jaw had been, by placing that layer behind my photo. I rotated the jaw layer and moved it below the teeth in the image, as the top most layer. I worked to recreated the goatee in a the image by cloning.

If I did it again, I’m sure I could make it more believable, but one sketch a day makes time a luxury. I’m sure I’ll use the technique in future sketches. Thanks, Nancy, and everybody please keep the captions coming!

37 of 365 is a common phrase #GIMP

Well, duh!
Well, duh!

I have a friend who has started saying this to me after every other sentence just because it makes me laugh to hear it. I thought it might be nice for my friend to see how I visualize it when they say it.

So I had a snapshot that I thought captured my smile nicely, but had some other issues worth fixing. I opened the original in the GIMP, Removed some wayward beard with the smudge tool, tightened focus with the sharpen tool in a few places, removed background noise with the blur tool, brightened and added depth to the photo using the brightness/contrast feature, made the image grayscale using desaturate, and added a color overtone with the colorize feature. I think more than anything, I just wanted to make up for yesterday’s monster.

Yes, when you use the clone tool to put your eye where your mouth was, and your mouth where your eyes were, you would call it a mixed facial orifice self-portrait. Wouldn’t you? This is a reminder that I am always looking for suggestions of photos and ideas in need of execution. When I don’t have them, I do freaky stuff like this. Apologies!

21 of 365 is a short explainer #GIMP

What is 365 Sketches about?
What is 365 Sketches about?

Many friends see my posts in their daily Facebook stream and wonder what it’s all about. One person pulled me aside and asked me to explain it. I gave a much more detailed explanation in my conversation, but it boiled down to this.
