This is a modified photo from 1913 of a woman named Geraldine Ferrar, of whom I have no knowledge other than the photo. I found it in the public domain, which I assume is kind of obvious. All I did to it was bring it into the GIMP, duplicate the layer to create a background image, remove the background content of the original with a soft edged eraser brush, then create a new transparent layer between those two layers to paint on. I then painted the rays you see on the transparent layer using a brush in the shape of those rays. A simple effect, but it certainly gives some focus to Ms. Ferrar.

Happy new year everyone! I decided to start the new series with something I’m very familiar with in the GIMP: Compositing images. I have three layers here: a background which I shot myself with my phone at a park, plus two images from Morguefile, which allows for no attribution at all. It’s a great resource. At any rate, I made all three images into layers. I used the select by color tool to select and delete the background from the girl’s face. I used the same tool to select and remove the background from the robot. They both had very clean simple backgrounds, which made them especially easy to remove, especially with a wacom tablet. I applied a blur to the girl and the park background, so that the viewer “focuses” on the most surprising thing: the robot. Hope you like it, and I hope even more that you try it.

Well, this finishes series one. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all you who supported the project. Special thanks must go to Janie Hermann and the Princeton Arts Council for a very fun show and opening at Princeton Public Library. Almost a year ago tonight, I was thinking of something to do to improve my understanding of an open source application, further my design skills, change my brand from beer to design, and strengthen my connections to key groups of friends, like librarians. All I have to say is that if you want to know something through and through, if you want to truly make it a part of you, if you want it to soak in, do it every day and share it.

I got approached a while ago by none other than two of my favorite Librarians, Julie Strange and Andy Woodworth, about the idea of helping them to brand a new blog venture that at the time was tentatively called “The Strange Woods” which has to be the best name ever conceived out of two author’s names. I recently freed up my sketching schedule and got to work to produce these mockups for their blog header. Unfortunately, I just got word back that naming the project is still underway, and The Strange Woods is likely going to be called something else. I really loved the designs, though, and thought I’d share them with you.

360 of 365 is an explainer for e-cigarettes #Inkscape #poster

As a former smoker, and a sometime cigar smoker, I have to say that I love this development. Considering the thousands of chemicals, many of which are known carcinogens, in cigarettes and other tobacco products, the reduction to 3 or 4 harmless ingredients with the optional addition of nicotine (not harmless at all) is a pretty amazing choice.
