Event: New Jersey Library Association 2010 Conference

Abstract: This session will introduce and demonstrate various ways in which Twitter is being used by libraries and patrons in order to increase communication, garner community, and strengthen relationships and awareness. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop  so that they can start playing with new Twtter based tools right away. Twitter enthusiasts, novices, and experts are all welcome to attend and add to the discussion.

This is actually Sunday’s post, even though it’s late in the day, but this was the first opportunity I had to be online today. I have posted this elsewhere, and I feel very strongly about the short sightedness of cutting Library programming, databases, and other funding. I understand that budgets must be kept, but it seems like other costs, like million dollar state run college coach salaries could be reduced or removed before dismantling the beneficial programs and positions of many people, because as many have said, that’s a hell of a lot of books. Support your local Library — they need you right now more than ever.

HRLC presents: Using GIMP and Inkscape

Venue: Highlands Regional Library Consortium at Hasbrouck Heights Library.

Abstract: In this day-long workshop, we’ll go in depth to discover how to use two fantastic Open Source Design Applications: the GNU Image Manipulation Program (AKA GIMP), and Inkscape.
The GIMP provides layers, effects, painting tools, and all of the features that you have come to expect from a fully featured imaging application like Adobe Photoshop. Inkscape is a vector-based illustration and layout application, similar to Adobe Illustrator in its ability to manipulate text, shapes, paths, vector points, and colors. Because these programs are Open Source Software, you benefit from the work of thousands of volunteer and professional developers, without having to pay anything for the use of the software. In this workshop, you will learn to use these tools by doing a few projects step-by-step. By the end of this workshop you will be able to effectively use painting and drawing tools, brushes, layers, path manipulation, photo manipulation, effects, rulers and grids to meet against your most challenging design needs.
