Seventies Extravaganza
Seventies Extravaganza

I was born in 73. This image is essentially my childhood. I decided to take yesterday’s fairly simple vinyl inspired idea a bit further by adding 70s’-era styled colors, some groovy stars, and a polaroid burned in background. Hope you can dig it!

Retro sound waves
Retro sound waves

So these are some cool retro styled waves. I think of them as sound waves, and I think they’re reminicient of record albums, grooviness, and the lacksadaisical feeling of my childhood in the 1970’s. To do it yourself in Inkscape:

  1. Create a smallish square (50x50px) with the rectangle tool (ctrl-r).
  2. Duplicate the square (ctrl-d) and move it to the bottom edge of the first square. It should overlap at the line and be aligned with the first square.
  3. Repeat this action until you have 7 squares in a vertical row. Feel free to use the align tool to align them all perfectly, but by eye is fine.
  4. Select the line of squares by rubber band method or by shift clicking each of them.
  5. Convert all of them to paths (shift-ctrl-c) them combine them all into a single path (ctrl-k).
  6. Select and copy (ctrl-c) the path.
  7. Open either the pencil or Bezier tool (whichever you prefer, if neither, use pencil) and set it to use the clipboard as a shape.
  8. Draw your line, and notice that the squares are used as a brush. Have fun!

A pig made out of text

The latest in my animal typography studies, A pig made out of text cc-by lemasney. Hope you enjoyed it!

‘A pig is any of the animals in the genus Sus, within the even-toed ungulate family Suidae. Pigs include domestic pigs and their ancestor, the common Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa), along with other species. Pigs, like all suids, are native to the Eurasian and African continents, ranging from Europe to the Pacific islands. Suids other than the pig are the babirusa of Indonesia, the pygmy hog of Asia, the warthog of Africa, and another genus of pigs from Africa. The suids are a sister clade to peccaries. Juvenile pigs are known as piglets.[1] Pigs are highly social and intelligent animals.[2] With around 1 billion individuals alive at any time, the domestic pig is among the most populous large mammals in the world.[3][4] Pigs are omnivores and can consume a wide range of food.[5] Pigs are biologically similar to humans and are thus frequently used for human medical research.[6]’

I love this quote. It’s definitely one of my favorites, and a small reminder that when disaster strikes, there is often a great thing or two that result, if you look for it. Looking for it is key.

I’m always excited when I can get my inbox down to 100 messages or less. I don;t do it often, but when I do, I dance a little inside my head. It should not be nearly so exciting.
