Hey, all. This one was fun. Sarah, who is a long time worker for me, but also a supportive friend and confidant, was nice enough to share a picture for the 365 sketches project. I had a short conversation about what she was looking for, and she mentioned that she liked my self portrait with a scowl, because it had a Japanese emoticon styled face, which I really only subtly realized when I made it. She often uses reversed or japanese styled icons in her emails, and the way she writes and types really is one of the tiny but many fun and interesting aspects of her persona.

With this in mind, in Inkscape, I imported her donated image, bitmap traced it, and removed some background elements, all of her facial features, and a cup of bubble tea that she’s drinking in the original photo. I simplified the nodes, which numbered over 8,000, resulting in just over 1,000 nodes. Using the calligraphy brush set very thin, I added a line to create a shirt, and another to create a chin, neither of which emerged from the bitmap trace.  With a thicker brush size and less opacity, I added color for her hair, shirt, jacket, foreground and background. I added a star using the shape tool. Finally, I created her facial features with the text tool. Thanks for the image Sarah, I hope you like what I did with it!

So this is in response to a 365 request from a friend and loyal workshop attendee, Robin Milne, who in noticing my love for the spiro spline effect sent me a crazy image of an object that had hundreds of beautiful squiggly spiro like lines. I have no idea what the object is, and in a way, I prefer not to, as it’s beautiful as simply an object.

So at any rate, I decided I was going to go back to an old standby theme, the Sun, especially in celebration of the Spring Equinox. I took Robin’s image, I brought it into Inkscape, bitmap traced it, duped and rotated it a few times, changing the color each time. Then I added a central ellipse to make it clearly a sun, finally working into all of it with the calligraphy tool.  I built a sunset styled gradient in the background, and painted in a landscape below. For a final touch, I added a candy coating effect to the sun. I enjoyed making it, and I thank Robin for caring enough to send an image, and you for caring enough to stop by. Happy spring!

Hey all. This is a 365 request from my very good friend Janie. She sent me a funny and exciting picture of someone very dear to her going down a slide, and I decided to take it somewhere different in Inkscape. I was especially inspired for this image by the one below, one that I use to discuss sometimes non-ambiguous emotion in design.

Hey, all. Here’s a 365 request from a good friend and brilliant thinker, Deep. He sent me a picture of his phone (looks like a Blackjack, but I’m not positive) being attacked by a staple remover, but I decided to focus on just the phone. That’s a really nice aspect of Inkscape, in that you can quickly abstract a photo and remove anything that you don’t want or need without the meticulous selection work often needed to do the same in a bitmap based tool like the GIMP. Different tool for a different purpose, but this is one of the reasons I love Inkscape. I took the original image, bitmap traced it, removed everything but the phone, and then duplicated and blurred the duplicate for the glow effect. I then added a background and placed some pencil marks set to shape: triangle in to give that “shiny” attention effect. I applied the same glow effect on the pencil marks. Thanks for the submission, Deep — that’s a super phone!

So in a followup to yesterday’s post, here is @suzieprof again, showing her true feelings for Mondays. Her face was bitmap traced. The clouds are simply unioned ellipses. The rainfall is made up of paths with dotted lines set to long-short-long-short. There are ellipses below to indicate splashes.

Every week, a certain close friend does a status update, usually early on Mondays, about how they hate Mondays. So noted, pally.

So, I threatened to make a sketch about it, and she wondered where it was. I hope she decides to use it well.

Even if she doesn’t, it’s CC Share alike, like all my sketches so feel free to use it on coffee mugs, tshirts, towels, you know, anything you want to use to share your feelings about Mondays.

Although, I warn you, you likely like Mondays more than my dear friend.
