Charles Brodowicz, an attendee and participant in my recent series of Inkscape Workshops at Princeton Public Library, suggested this sketch, and I’m really glad he did!

Platypus
Platypus text

I got called out by a friend of Dan Wadlinger’s to make a Platypus. I thought it was an interesting challenge, even if I already had a very cute P animal in this series. Hope you like it!

“The platypus is among nature’s most unlikely animals. In fact, the first scientists to examine a specimen believed they were the victims of a hoax. The animal is best described as a hodgepodge of more familiar species: the duck (bill and webbed feet), beaver (tail), and otter (body and fur). Males are also venomous. They have sharp stingers on the heels of their rear feet and can use them to deliver a strong toxic blow to any foe.” curated by lemasney from Platypus | National Geographic at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/p/platypus/

“The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), also known as the duck-billed platypus, is a semiaquatic egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth. The animal is the sole living representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record. The first preserved platypus body was thought to have been a fake, made of several animals sewn together,[3] when it was first looked at by scientists in 1799.[4]” curated by lemasney from Platypus – Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platypus

So, here is the result of a surprisingly positive response to my recent text based Giraffe sketch (linked below) which contains a tutorial for this process. Tim McGee suggested an alphabet of animals, an idea that immediately got me going, and Janie suggested that a series of these would be very nice. Thanks for the continuing ideas and support, friends!

Act4SL
Act4SL

This is a series of wordmarks I’m working on to help brand a new venture called Act for School Libraries (Act4SL). I love the idea: advocacy for media expertise in school libraries so that transliteracy can be fostered in one of the most important places possible: school libraries. This is a work in progress, essentially just begun, and therefore has some roughness to it. That said, I love the directions that it is going in!
