Free design course tonight at Princeton Public Library

Design Course for the non-designer.

Tonight, at 7 pm in the Technology Center at Princeton Public Library, I will be teaching a design course for free to the public about the basic tenets of graphic design. No registration is necessary. In the class, we will discuss color, typography, layout, shape, format, tools, inspiration and more. The increasing importance of visual literacy for communication in an increasingly visual communication environment means that those who are simply using text, clip-art, and other more common tools are making messages that are getting lost among more visual presentations. Come visit us and let’s fix that.

“This workshop covers the foundations of design principles, key (free) tools for design and illustration, and sources for inspiration to help you create the best visual solution for your particular needs. Learn about color theory, typography, layout and more. Instructor: John LeMasney.  Skill Level: Intermediate” – Graphic Design for Non-Designers | Princeton Public Library –

Lack of exposure to natural light in the workspace is associated wi… – PubMed – NCBI

The diurnal light cycle has a crucial influence on all life on earth. Unfortunately, modern society has modified this life-governing cycle by stressing maximum production and by giving insufficient attention to the ecological balance and homeostasis of the human metabolism. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of exposure or lack of exposure to natural light in a rest/activity rhythm on cortisol and melatonin levels, as well as on psychological variables in humans under natural conditions.

Pixelation portrait of Marilyn Monroe

In this transformation of the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe, I decided to make the pixelated image, because I’m observing a special social visual interest in pixelation. Enjoy. 🙂

In the GIMP, I decided to import this image of Marilyn, then to apply a pixelize filter, resize to 128×128, and export as a PNG. Easy to do, but I think it will become more important to be able to do.

NCompass Live Tech Talk: Using the Arduino to Develop Coding Literacy in Libraries

“In this talk, John LeMasney will discuss the trials, tribulations, and successes of creating and teaching classes on Arduino as programming at several New Jersey libraries across the state. Arduino is an open source hardware platform for learning about and making electronics prototypes to scratch your own itch. It is a well-supported, low-threshold-of-entry approach of inviting those new to electronics to create their own working circuits at a low monetary cost and little existing knowledge. I’ll demonstrate what Arduino is in the larger sense, and why it’s fun and easy to get started with Arduino.

Presenter: John LeMasney, Owner, LeMasney Consulting, is a technologist, consultant, and open source advocate working in New Jersey and beyond. He often works with schools, businesses and libraries to develop technology-oriented training, programming and solutions for all kinds of people.

In this monthly feature of NCompass Live, the NLC’s Technology Innovation Librarian, Michael Sauers, will discuss the tech news of the month and share new and exciting tech for your library.” –
