So if you’re a librarian, you may have already seen this a few times. Back in mid June, I got a message from Janie Hermann that she was looking for a sketch for an upcoming American Libraries Association conference session using Battledecks, a presentation contest in which participants are asked to present on a topic using slides they’ve not seen yet. She asked only that I use a tiara in the design, as the tiara was the top prize. It’s hilarious fun, and lets presenters really bring their best adaptive skills, wit, and self control to the stage. I was thrilled for the opportunity to help, and thanks, Janie, as usual, for asking! Peter Bromberg created a youtube playlist with all of the festivities captured at this youtube playlist link.

I recently got a request from repeat requester and friend Shannon who asked about a sketch thusly:

Challenge:Punked out angel wings, with the caption “I only LOOK like an angel” Inspiration: A white, fluffy fru-fru dog who’s well-deserved nickname is Punk (owned by a good and mutual friend of ours 😉

Thanks for the inspiration, Shannon, as always! I really appreciate your dedication. 🙂 I’m not sure if this is what you envisioned, but it’s the thing I saw when I thought a while on your request. 🙂

This came out of a conversation with a very good friend about relationships and how some people really work together in couples in such a way that they increase in energy and explosive potential when they’re near each other. I personally prefer a calming relationship with others — I seek out people who are happy, productive, and encouraging, but I know a few people who seek out the explosive, the challenging, on purpose. In a way, I think of my relationship with you, the audience for 365sketches, as having explosive potential. With each feedback loop, each connection, each suggestion, I get blown up into a new way of thinking, and detonations of new ideas. Thanks!

Today’s my birthday, and today’s sketch is officially the halfway point, as 365/2=182.5. Strange!

My very good friend, producer and mentor Janie Hermann, who helped me more than ever in the last year, deserves a break. She’s not going to get it this year, for various reasons, but normally, every year, she gets to visit a lake in her homeland of Canada. She made her suggestion with photos as follows, which I thought was particularly beautiful, (with geolocation protective edits):

When we go to Canada we go to a place that is very special to me — our family cottage on a (lake) deep in… Northern Ontario on the rocky Canadian shield. It is a small(er) lake with around 20 cottages on the perimeter and a very small island in the middle that is the home to two Loons that come there every summer to raise their young.

Waking with the morning mist off the lake as I sit on the dock with my coffee listening to the loons and watching them float by is one of my favorite summer memories… Loons are unusual birds, their call is so evocative and to me it evokes summer in Canada.

The best part of a morning is if the loons decide to take a run across the lake… I miss the lake, our loons, and our canoe…

yes  tonight… I am dreaming of a northern lake.

Janie, I hope I was able to capture, if just a wee bit, your Northern lake. Thanks as always for the opportunity, your friendship, and your guidance. It’s invaluable.

This is in response to Janie Hermann introducing Michael Porter to my work when he was looking for an infographic, which I appreciated. However, Michael noted rightly that this project did not have any examples of infographics which is a very specific way of presenting data graphically, usually to represent statistics, simplify concepts, or illustrate a key point. I’ve done more than a few in my work, but this project didn’t have any, so I made this to show how fun, wacky and effective Inkscape can be for this kind of work. Those lucky dogs.

We’ll begin with a spin traveling in the world of my creation – Illustrated lyric from Pure Imagination, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

In this post, I’m doing a few things:

  1. illustrating a lyric from a great song in a fantastic movie,
  2. lamenting the remake’s poor choice of new songs,
  3. showing sadness about the current use of this song in a commercial,
  4. and suggesting that sometimes my work can be a bit quirky and imaginative, perhaps defying explanation.
