Innocence – Poem by Thomas Traherne<\/h2>\n

“But that which most I wonder at, which most<\/p>\n

I did esteem my bliss, which most I boast,<\/p>\n

And ever shall enjoy, is that within<\/p>\n

I felt no stain, nor spot of sin.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No darkness then did overshade,<\/p>\n

But all within was pure and bright,<\/p>\n

No guilt did crush, nor fear invade<\/p>\n

But all my soul was full of light.<\/p>\n

A joyful sense and purity<\/p>\n

Is all I can remember;<\/p>\n

The very night to me was bright,<\/p>\n

‘Twas summer in December.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A serious meditation did employ<\/p>\n

My soul within, which taken up with joy<\/p>\n

Did seem no outward thing to note, but fly<\/p>\n

All objects that do feed the eye.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While it those very objects did<\/p>\n

Admire, and prize, and praise, and love,<\/p>\n

Which in their glory most are hid,<\/p>\n

Which presence only doth remove.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their constant daily presence I<\/p>\n

Rejoicing at, did see;<\/p>\n

And that which takes them from the eye<\/p>\n

Of others, offer’d them to me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No inward inclination did I feel<\/p>\n

To avarice or pride: my soul did kneel<\/p>\n

In admiration all the day. No lust, nor strife,<\/p>\n

Polluted then my infant life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No fraud nor anger in me mov’d,<\/p>\n

No malice, jealousy, or spite;<\/p>\n

All that I saw I truly lov’d.<\/p>\n

Contentment only and delight<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Were in my soul. O Heav’n! what bliss<\/p>\n

Did I enjoy and feel!<\/p>\n

What powerful delight did this<\/p>\n

Inspire! for this I daily kneel.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Whether it be that nature is so pure,<\/p>\n

And custom only vicious; or that sure<\/p>\n

God did by miracle the guilt remove,<\/p>\n

And make my soul to feel his love<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So early: or that ’twas one day,<\/p>\n

Wherein this happiness I found;<\/p>\n

Whose strength and brightness so do ray,<\/p>\n

That still it seems me to surround;<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What ere it is, it is a light<\/p>\n

So endless unto me<\/p>\n

That I a world of true delight<\/p>\n

Did then and to this day do see.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That prospect was the gate of Heav’n, that day<\/p>\n

The ancient light of Eden did convey<\/p>\n

Into my soul: I was an Adam there<\/p>\n

A little Adam in a sphere<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Of joys! O there my ravish’d sense<\/p>\n

Was entertain’d in Paradise,<\/p>\n

And had a sight of innocence<\/p>\n

Which was beyond all bound and price.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An antepast of Heaven sure!<\/p>\n

I on the earth did reign;<\/p>\n

Within, without me, all was pure;<\/p>\n

I must become a child again.”<\/p>\n
