This was when we lived in Levittown, PA. Our 5 cats (gotten before we had kids) spent a lot of time on that stovetop so that they could peer out the kitchen window, and we believe that one of them inadvertently turned the switch when jumping up on or down from the stove. !@#$%^& cats! We removed the handles from the stove unless we were cooking, and never had another problem. While the house didn’t burn down, we did have to replace a portion of the nearest wall, which suffered some damage from the prolonged exposure to the heat. We put up some insulation and heat resistant surface, but we’re always thankful that we survived that night.

In Inkscape, I used the spiral tool to make the coil, which I feel like I seldom get a chance to use. I widened the stroke, gave it a rounded cap, and duplicated it a few times. I blurred the duplicates and gave them various warm tones and hues to indicate heat and glowy light. I created the ellipses around the burner to show the shiny edge of the reflective underplate. Finally, I added a handle using the ellipse tool, and used the hot metal effect to create a high reflectance on it, facing the burner. Hope you enjoyed it!

One of the most frightening experiences I’ve ever had as a homeowner was to come downstairs in the early morning, notice a horrible burnt chemical smell, and turn the corner to see that the electric burner had been left on high overnight.
